General Information On Omnicef

Omnicef is used for treating some of the common infections caused by bacteria, such as acute chronic bronchitis, pneumonia, sinus, tonsil, or throat infections, skin infections, or ear infections. The generic name of the drug is cefdinir and it belongs to the category of cephalosporin antibiotics. It works by destroying bacterial cell walls, thus preventing their growth and treating the bacterial infection. Omnicef is available in the form of oral capsules that need to be taken exactly as directed by your doctor.

Side Effects for Omnicef

Some common side effects of Omnicef include indigestion, mild diarrhea, vomiting, stomach pain, nausea, dizziness, headache, mild itching, skin rash, vaginal discharge or itching, and diaper rash in infants taking Omnicef oral solution. However, you need to contact your doctor if you experience bloody or watery diarrhea, chest pain, body ache, flu symptoms, fever chills, unusual bleeding, seizures, pale or yellow skin, confusion, weakness, dark urine, jaundice, sore throat, headache with red skin rashes, peeling or blistering, increased thirst, weight gain, swelling, loss of appetite, shortness of breath, or infrequent urination. An allergic reaction to Omnicef can be identified by hives, rashes, difficulty breathing, severe dizziness, or swelling or itching of the face, lips, throat or tongue. If you experience any of these conditions, you must contact your doctor right away.

Precautions

Before you buy Omnicef, you should inform your doctor if you have an allergy to cefdinir, penicillin, or any other cephalosporin antibiotics like cephalexin. You should also tell him/her if you have a medical history of intestinal or kidney disease. As the drug causes dizziness, you should not drive a vehicle, operate a machine, or do any such activity that requires complete alertness. For that reason, you should also avoid alcohol intake, as it may worsen the side effects of Omnicef. Although the medication is not known to cause harm to an unborn or nursing baby, you should consult your doctor before taking Omnicef if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Omnicef Dosage

Your doctor may advise you to take Omnicef 300mg twice a day or Omnicef 600mg once a day, depending on your age, weight, and medical condition. For children, Omnicef 14mg/kg is recommended, not exceeding 600mg a day. If you have creatine clearance less than 30ml/minute, you will be advised to take only 300mg a day. Usually, you will need to take Omnicef for 5 to 10 consecutive days, but the duration of your treatment may vary depending on your condition and response to treatment.

Interactions

Before taking Omnicef, you should inform your doctor if you are using any medicinal products like probenecid or live bacterial vaccinations. As this medicine can decrease the effects of hormonal contraceptive methods, you should inform your doctor if you are using birth control pills, rings, or patches for contraception. If you are going to have a diabetic urine test undertaken, Omnicef may affect its results, and thus, you should inform the lab personnel or your doctor about your use of the drug so that they can make the necessary adjustments.
