General Information On Oxistat

Oxistat is an anti-fungal medication and is used for treating skin infections like jock itch, ringworm and athlete’s foot. Generic name of this drug is Oxiconazole. It belongs to a category of drugs known as azoles antifungals. The medicine works by preventing growth of fungus on your skin. You can buy Oxistat in the form of a topical lotion which needs to be applied directly on the infected skin area. Sometimes, the medicine can also be used for treating pityriasis, a condition affecting the skin of neck, legs, arms and chest.

Side Effects for Oxistat

Common and mild side effects of this medicine include swelling, stinging, burning, irritation, flaking, redness, and pimple-like bumps. If any of these become intolerable, you should seek medical help. You must inform your doctor if you develop open sores, oozing or blistering after applying this medicine. Apart from these, the drug may also cause an allergy in certain patients. You should immediately contact your doctor if you develop swelling or itching on the face, throat, lips or tongue, hives, rashes, trouble breathing, or severe dizziness.

Some patients may experience side effects other than ones listed above. To know all the possible side effects of this medicine, read the patient information leaflet that is included with the medicine.

Precautions

You should not buy Oxistat if you are allergic to Oxiconazole or any other azole antifungal like ketoconazole, miconazole, or clotrimazole. Avoid wearing synthetic or tight-fitting clothes, as it may worsen your condition and cause discomfort. You should try to wear loose cotton clothes or natural fabrics until the infection gets totally healed. Use the medicine for the full period of prescription, even if you notice that the infection has healed. After applying the medicine on affected skin areas, do not cover it with an occlusive dressing or bandage, as it will hinder circulation of air and may worsen the infection. Most importantly, avoid getting this lotion into your eyes, mouth, or nose. If this happens, rinse the area with water thoroughly to flush out the lotion.

Oxistat Dosage

Clean the infected area thoroughly, let it dry and then, apply Oxistat 1% cream over the skin. In most cases, patients are asked to apply this cream twice per day. Length of your treatment and Oxistat dosage will depend on the type of your infection, its intensity, how old the infection is, and your response to the treatment. Exceeding the recommended dosage will not help your condition. On the contrary, it is likely to increase the medicine’s side effects. You must remember that this medicine is meant to be applied on the skin only, and should not be applied in eyes, nose, vagina, or mouth. Use the lotion as directed by your doctor.

Interactions

While using Oxistat, you should not use any other topical medication, unless approved by your doctor. Other topical medications, especially when applied around the same skin area where Oxistat is administered, may decrease its effectiveness or absorption. Before using this topical medication, inform your doctor all the prescription, non-prescription, and herbal medicines that you are currently taking.
