General Information on Phoslo

Phoslo is recommended to adult patients for treating hyperphosphatemia in late stage renal failure conditions. The generic name of the drug is calcium acetate and it belongs to the category of natural minerals. It works by inhibiting phosphate absorption in the intestines and stomach into the body, thus keeping the bones stronger and preventing calcification of the soft tissues. Phoslo is an oral tablet that’s available with the strength of 667 mg.

Side Effects for Phoslo

Some of the side effects commonly associated with Phoslo include loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, constipation, increased thirst, dry mouth, and frequent urination. Most of these side effects are mild and can be managed easily without any professional medical help. However, if any of these worsen or persist, you should stop taking Phoslo and contact your doctor. If you experience severe stomach or abdominal pain, you should seek medical attention immediately so that the issue can be sorted out without it becoming worse. An allergic reaction to the drug can be identified by rash or hives all over the body, swelling or itching of the face, tongue, throat or lips, trouble breathing, and severe dizziness. If you experience any of these, you should contact your doctor and tell him/her about your symptoms.

Precautions

Before you buy Phoslo, you should inform your doctor if you have an allergy to calcium acetate or any active or inactive ingredients in the medicine. You should also tell your doctor if you are suffering from a medical condition, especially if you have high calcium levels in your blood, a condition known as hypercalcemia. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you should take this medicine only if clearly needed, because it is not yet known whether Phoslo is safe to be used under these conditions or not. While taking Phoslo, you should take care not to allow calcium built-up in your body. For this, you should avoid having foods that are high in calcium. Your doctor may also need to conduct regular X-rays and tests to make sure that the amount of calcium is not too high in your body.

Phoslo Dosage

Dialysis patients may be advised to initiate the treatment with two Phoslo 667mg tablets with each meal. After that, the dosage can be increased to the desired level until you attain the right amount of serum phosphate. Based on your medical condition and response to treatment, your doctor may advise you to take as many as four Phoslo 667mg tablets with each meal. You should take the medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor and should not stop taking it immediately even if you feel that your symptoms have been relieved.

Interactions

Some of the drugs that may interact adversely with Phoslo include doxycyclines like Oracea and Vibramycin, minocyclines like Dynacin and Vectrin, tetracyclines like Broadspec and Tetracap, and demeclocyclines like Declomycin. Apart from that, you should not take any calcium supplements along with Phoslo, unless your doctor advises you to do so. Avoid taking any antacid with this drug; if it is necessary, your doctor will recommend you to take a certain antacid that does not contain calcium.
