General Information On Rapamune

Rapamune is used in combination with other medicines to prevent acute rejection of kidney after a kidney transplant. The generic name of this drug is Sirolimus. This drug belongs to a group of medicines known as immunosuppressants. The drug works to weaken the body’s immune system (defense system) which helps in acceptance of a new organ as the body’s own. Rapamune is available in form of a tablet and oral solution. The drug is a prescription medicine which means you will need to consult your doctor before you buy Rapamune.

Side Effects for Rapamune

Some people may experience side effects after taking this medication. Nausea, constipation, joint pain, acne, headache, skin rash, vomiting, or stomach pain are some of the common side effects that may be experienced by some people after taking this drug. In rare cases, especially when the patient has a weak immune system, Rapamune may cause serious side effects such as chest pain, easy bleeding, pain while breathing, chills, fever, swelling in the stomach, feet or hands, weight loss, or burning sensation while urinating. You should immediately inform you doctor if you experience any of the above-mentioned side effects after taking Rapamune tablets or oral solution.

Precautions

You should not use Rapamune if you are allergic to Sirolimus. The drug may not be the right medication for people with certain medical conditions. You should tell your doctor about your medical history, especially of kidney disease, liver disease, skin cancer, high cholesterol or cytomegalovirus. The drug may harm an unborn baby. Therefore, women who are pregnant or plan to become pregnant should tell their doctor about this before starting a treatment that includes Rapamune. The drug may pass to a child through breast milk and therefore women should not breastfeed their child while taking the medication. Women of child bearing age should use effective birth control methods while taking the medication and continue using birth control methods for 12 weeks after the completion of the treatment.

Rapamune Dosage

Rapamune oral tablets are available in two strengths – Rapamune 1mg and Rapamune 2mg. This drug is also available in form of an oral solution, Rapamune Oral solution 1mg/ml. The recommended starting dose after a kidney transplant is Rapamune 6mg per day. Your doctor may recommend you take other medicines such as corticosteroids and cyclosporine along with Rapamune.
