General Information On Salagen

An oral medication, Salagen helps treat symptoms of a dry mouth. This drug falls in the category of drugs called cholinergic agonists. Pilocarpine (generic name of this drug) increases the production of saliva. This, in turn, helps in alleviating symptoms of a dry mouth.

Side Effects for Salagen

Patients who buy Salagen may experience side effects such as nausea, sweating, chills, a runny nose, flushing, increased urination, mild weakness, diarrhea, or blurred vision. In most cases, the aforementioned symptoms are mild and stop occurring after a few days. Consult your doctor if any of the above symptoms persist or exacerbate.

Uncommon but serious side effects of Pilocarpine include: irregular heartbeat, increased coughing, wheezing, or phlegm production, severe stomach ache, or mental/mood changes. Consult your doctor or pharmacist immediately if you notice any of these symptoms.

In extremely rare cases, Salagen may cause an allergic reaction. Stop your medication and seek immediate medical help if you experience breathing trouble, itching, skin rashes, hives, or swelling of certain body parts.

This is not a complete list of side effects. Ask your pharmacist to give you the patient information leaflet - which should contain a complete list of side effects - when you buy Salagen or refill your subscription.

Precautions

If you have a history of eye problems (such as glaucoma), heart disease, stomach problems, respiratory problems (such as asthma, emphysema, or chronic bronchitis), hypertension (high blood pressure), hypotension (low blood pressure), liver disease, or kidney disease, then your doctor may decide against Salagen treatment or ask you to undergo special tests to ensure the treatment is safe. This is why you must inform your doctor about your medical history before you start using this medicine.

Salagen can also affect your vision, so exercise caution while driving or performing other hazardous tasks. Pilocarpine may cause you to sweat profusely and increase your risk of dehydration. Make sure you drink plenty of fluids during the course of treatment.

It is unclear whether Salagen is safe during pregnancy. Do not take this drug without your doctor’s consent during pregnancy. If you become pregnant during treatment, then keep your doctor informed. He/she will evaluate if it is safe to continue using Salagen. It is not known whether Salagen affects a breastfeeding infant, so make sure you consult your doctor before taking the drug during the breastfeeding stage.

Salagen Dosage

The recommended starting dose is Salagen 5mg twice daily. Depending on your response to therapy and other factors, your doctor may increase your dosage later. Take the medication only as directed by your doctor. You should take Salagen with a full glass of water (8 ounces) with or without food.

Interactions

Certain medications such as high blood pressure medicines, antidepressants, antipsychotic medicines, seizure medicines, or antihistamines may reduce the efficacy of Salagen or increase the risk of certain side effects. Other drugs, which are not listed above, may also interact with Pilocarpine. Before starting treatment, let your doctor know all the medications that you are taking. Also, consult him/her before using a new prescription-based, non-prescription, or herbal medicine.
