General Information On Sutent

Sutent is an anti-cancer medication used for treating progressive or advanced tumors in the kidneys or digestive system, including renal cell caricoma and gastrointestinal stromal tumors. Its generic name is Sunitinib Malate and it belongs to the class of oral receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitors. Sutent is an oral capsule which works by blocking the growth of tumor cells and releasing several enzymes onto the blood vessel and tumor cells. Sutent is mostly used in place of Gleevec, especially when the latter is not prescribed to a patient or has not been successful in stopping cancer growth.

Side Effects for Sutent

Sutent patients may complain about an unpleasant or unusual taste in the mouth, nausea, stomach upset or pain, vomiting, constipation or diarrhea, skin rash, changes in hair or skin color, hair loss, muscle pain, joint pain, and headache. Most of these effects are temporary and subside as your body gets used to the drug. However, you need to discontinue using the medicine and contact your doctor if you experience chest pain, shortness of breath, swelling of the feet or ankles, sudden weakness or numbness in one side of the body, problems with speech, balance, or vision, tarry, bloody, or black stools, coughing up of blood, dark colored vomit, dark urine, jaundice, clay colored stools, upper stomach pain, or sunburn-like peeling in the soles of the feet or the palms.

Precautions

Your doctor will not recommend you to buy Sutent if you are suffering from liver disease, thyroid disorder, high blood pressure, or heart rhythm disorder. You should also tell your doctor if you have a history of Long QT Syndrome, heart attack, congestive heart failure, coronary artery disease, blood clots, stroke, transient ischemic attack, or bypass graft surgery. Do not use Sutent if you are pregnant, as it may cause harm to your unborn baby. If you are breastfeeding, you should take this drug only if clearly indicated, because it may pass into your breast milk and harm your nursing child.

Sutent Dosage

For treating gastrointestinal stromal tumors or renal cell caricoma, you will be recommended to take Sutent 50mg per day as a single dose. Depending on your tolerability and response to the treatment, your doctor may decrease the dosage by Sutent 12.5mg. The oral capsules need to be taken with or without food. If your doctor has prescribed other concomitant medicines as well, he/she will ask you to take Sutent 37.5mg only once a day. The treatment continues for 4 weeks, after which you will have to maintain a gap of 2 weeks.

Interactions

You should inform your doctor if you are taking HIV medications such as indinavir, ritonavir, or atazanavir, or seizure medications such as phenytoin, carbamazepine, or phenobarbital. Apart from these, you should also tell him/her if you are taking drugs like itraconazole, dexamethasone, nefazodone, rifampin, clarithromycin, or telithromycin. Tell him/her about all the medicines you are taking at present, including herbal products, health supplements, and prescription and non-prescription drugs.
