General Information On Tasigna

Tasigna is prescribed for treating a type of blood cancer known as Philadelphia Chromosome Positive chronic myeloid leukemia. The generic name of the drug is Nilotinib and it belongs to the category of protein tyrosine kinase inhibitors. Tasigna is an oral capsule that works by interfering with the growth and spread of cancer cells. It is given to adult patients who are in the chronic phase of this disease and have recently been diagnosed. Sometimes, it can also be prescribed for treating accelerated CML phase in adult patients who did not respond to, or displayed some resistance to prior cancer treatment.

Side Effects for Tasigna

You may experience mild skin rash, constipation or diarrhea, itching, headache, back or neck pain, weight changes, tiredness, and cold symptoms like a stuffy nose, sore throat, and sneezing after taking Tasigna. However, most of these side effects are short-lived and improve on their own as your body adjusts to the drug. That said, you should contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of its serious side effects.

These may include seizures, unusual bleeding from the nose, vagina, rectum, or mouth, red or purple spots under the skin, problems with vision, shortness of breath, crusting or redness around hair follicles, pain in the upper stomach, loss of appetite, clay colored stools, dark urine, jaundice, cough with green or yellow mucus, stabbing chest pain, or severe upper stomach pain spreading to the back.

Precautions

Do not buy Tasigna if you have an allergy to Nilotinib or if you are suffering from a heart disease, heart rhythm disorder or liver disease. You should also inform your doctor if your family has a history of Long QT syndrome or pancreatitis or if you have low magnesium or potassium levels in your blood. Patients who have shown a resistance to or not responded to other cancer treatments should take Tasigna 400mg. Patients with hepatic impairment will be given a lower dose. Dosage adjustments can be made as per the patient’s response to treatment and individual medical condition. If your ECG has shown QT interval problems, your doctor may decide to decrease the dosage or discontinue the drug.

Interactions

Your doctor may not prescribe Tasigna if you are already taking blood thinners, antibiotics, antifungal medications, antidepressants, anti-malaria medicines, blood pressure or heart medications, HIV/AIDS medicines, narcotic medicines, or stomach acid reducers. You should also inform your doctor if you are taking drugs for psychiatric disorders, medicines that prevent an organ transplant rejection, nausea or vomiting, migraine headaches, or drugs such as conivaptan, arsenic trioxide, isoniazid, imatinib, droperidol, pimozide, or midazolam.
