General Information On Trileptal
Trileptal is used for the treatment of partial seizures in adult patients and children over 2 years of age. Its generic name is Oxcarbazepine, and it belongs to the class of drugs known as anti-convulsant or anti-epileptic medicines. Trileptal is an oral tablet which decreases the nerve impulses that cause seizures. Your doctor may prescribe this medicine either alone or with any other drugs to treat your condition.
Side Effects for Trileptal
Some of the commonly reported side effects of Trileptal include headache, trouble concentrating, problems with walking, balance or speech, dizziness, tiredness, upset stomach, mild nausea or vomiting, diarrhea, blurred or double vision, skin rash, shaking, or tremors. Most of these are experienced only initially, as they subside as your body gets used to the drug. However, some serious side effects that a patient may experience after taking Trileptal include swollen glands, easy bruising or bleeding, severe tingling, pain, numbness or muscle weakness, shortness of breath, wheezing, chest pain, dark urine, jaundice, clay-colored stools, stopped urination, or unusual bleeding from the vagina, rectum, mouth or nose.
Trileptal can sometimes reduce sodium level in your body, which causes a fatal electrolyte imbalance. Watch out for symptoms such as hallucinations, memory problems, shallow breathing, fainting, more severe seizures, and unsteadiness. You should also inform your doctor about any new symptoms that you may have surfaced, such as restlessness, hostility, agitation, depression, mood changes, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts. You should also stop using Trileptal if you develop an allergic reaction to it. Symptoms of an allergic reaction may include hives or rashes in any part of the body or all over the body, difficulty breathing, severe dizziness or swelling of the face, throat, tongue or lips.
Precautions
Your doctor will not ask you to buy Trileptal if you have an allergy to Oxcarbazepine or if you are suffering from other medical conditions such as kidney or liver disease. Also inform him/her if you have low sodium levels in your blood. If you are taking hormonal birth control pills to prevent unwanted pregnancy, Trileptal may decrease their efficiency. Therefore, it would be better to switch to a barrier form of contraception during the treatment, such as condoms or diaphragms. Trileptal is known to pass into a woman’s breast milk and may harm the nursing baby. Therefore, you will not be advised to take this drug if you are breastfeeding a baby. You should also not take it during pregnancy, as its safety during this condition is not yet established.
