General Information On Visudyne

Visudyne is a light activated drug used to prevent blindness and decreased vision in a person suffering from age related macular degeneration or AMD. The generic name of the drug is Verteporfin. It is available in the form of an injection. The drug itself does not treat the condition. The active ingredient Verteporfin is activated with a laser light. In the presence of oxygen and light, Verteporfin reacts with oxygen to generate a cytotoxic (cell-killing) effect. Visudyne is also recommended for the treatment of predominantly classic CNV that is caused by pathologic myopia or ocular histoplasmosis. The drug is a prescription medication, so you should buy Visudyne only if doctor has recommended it for your treatment.

Side Effects for Visudyne

Visudyne may cause side effects such as blurred vision, tiredness, headache and reactions at the injection site such as swelling, redness, pain and itching. You should immediately consult your doctor if any side effects become bothersome or persist for a long time.

The drug may cause severe reactions in rare cases. You should inform your doctor promptly if you notice any severe side effects such as sweating, chest pain, severe dizziness, and swelling of the throat/face tongue, rash, or breathing problems. You need to understand that your doctor has recommended this drug because he/she has an opinion that the benefits provided by the drug are far greater than its potential to produce side effects. You can reduce the risk of side effects by consulting your doctor before you buy Visudyne.

Precautions

Your doctor has to determine if the drug is safe for you before recommending it for treatment. Some drugs may not be the right medication to treat your condition if you have specific medical problems or suffer/have suffered from any disease in the past. You should tell your doctor about your medical history before starting the treatment. Inform your doctor if you have liver disease or specific metabolic disorders such as porphyria. Visudyne increases your sensitivity to light, so you should always wear dark sunglasses and protective clothing while venturing outdoors. You should not undergo any surgery or dental procedure at least 5 days before taking the regular dose of Visudyne. If your dentist/doctor recommends any dental procedure/surgery, then you should inform him/her that you are taking Visudyne.

Visudyne Dosage

The medication needs to be injected in the vein slowly though an intravenous infusion, and the whole process may take at least 10 minutes. The Visudyne injection is given under medical supervision in a hospital/clinic setting. A laser treatment to your eye is given 15 minutes after the IV infusion to activate the drug. You should avoid exposing your eyes to strong indoor light or natural sunlight for at least 5 days after the treatment. Always wear dark sunglasses while indoors or outdoors.

Interactions

Visudyne may potentially interact with other drugs and cause mild to severe side effects. The medication may interact with drugs such antioxidants, calcium channel blockers, and blood thinners. You should tell your doctor about every medicine you are taking, which includes prescription medicines, over the counter drugs, and herbal supplements. Also tell your doctor if you are taking medications that increase your sensitivity to light such as Griseofulvin, Phenothiazines, sulfa drugs, or Tetracycline antibiotics.
