General Information On Aldara Cream
The purpose of Aldara Cream is several fold. It helps rid the body of several different skin diseases including superficial basal cell carcinoma, actinic keratosis and genital warts. This medication was made to work with the immune cells in the body. For genital warts, or human papilloma virus, Aldara cream, when applied, is like a magnet, attracting immune cells to the affected area. These immune cells work hard to kill warts. While this cream works for basal cell carcinoma and actinic keratosis, the mechanism behind its effectiveness is not known. Dosage levels include: Aldara Cream 0.05%.
Side Effects/Precautions for Aldara Cream
Generic Aldara Cream or Imiquimod itself, should not be used if you are allergic to any of the ingredients in the cream. Some of the side effects include back pain, headache, diarrhea and overall general pain. Other side effects include flaking of the skin, redness, itching and burning. You can also experience scabbiness, thick skin, tenderness and swelling where the cream has been applied. Eczema, viral infections and atrial fibrillation have also been described in some cases. Rare side effects include fever, alopecia, rigors, urinary tract infections, vomiting and dizziness.
Aldara Cream or Imiquimod Cream, should not be used if you have any autoimmune illnesses or have taken immunosupressants for a medical condition. For patients with Xeroderma Pigmentosum or Basal Cell Nevus Syndrome we do not advise using Aldara cream as its safety and effectiveness have not been confirmed. Generic Aldara cream should not be taken orally or used in the eyes or inserted in the vagina.
Aldara Cream Dosage
The dosage for Aldara cream varies depending upon your condition. The cream is used twice a week (example: Monday and Thursday; Tuesday and Friday etc) for 16 weeks for the treatment of actinic keratosis. The cream is applied 5 times in a week (daily once) for 6 weeks, for the treatment of superficial basal cell cancer. For the treatment of external perianal or genital warts, the cream is used 3 times a week for a maximum period of 16 weeks or until all the warts are clear. Aldara cream 10 mg is used for a tumor less than 1.0 cm diameter. Aldara cream 25 mg and 40 mg cream is used for tumors >1.0 - <1.5 cm and >1.5 - 2.0 cm diameter respectively.
