General Information On Iressa

Iressa is used for the treatment of several types of lung cancer. A cancer chemotherapy medication, Gefitinib (generic name of this drug) slows the production and spread of lung cancer cells.

Side Effects for Iressa

This drug is known to cause various side effects. While some side effects of Iressa are serious and require immediate medical attention, others are mild and dissipate on their own within a few days.

You must immediately contact your doctor if you notice any of the following symptoms: severe or persistent loss of appetite/diarrhea/nausea/vomiting, eye pain, increased coughing, chest pain, fever, or difficulty breathing.

In addition to the above, you should also seek emergency medical assistance if Iressa triggers an allergic reaction. The symptoms of an allergic reaction are: breathlessness, wheezing, difficulty breathing, hives, swelling of your face, lips, or other body parts, or closing of your throat.

In most cases, the above symptoms subside completely once a patient’s body gets used to this medicine. However, if this does not happen, then you must consult your doctor.

You may also experience side effects that are not listed above. Before you start treatment, it will be best if you discuss all the side effects that may occur during treatment with your doctor. Also read the patient information leaflet that you receive when you buy Iressa.

Precautions

Certain pre-existing conditions such as lung problems (other than lung cancer) or liver disease may make Iressa treatment unsafe or require special monitoring of the patient during treatment. Ensure that you discuss your medical history with your doctor before using Gefitinib.

Approximately 1% of all patients on Iressa treatment develop interstitial lung disease, which is a potentially life-threatening lung condition, so if you experience any symptoms of interstitial lung disease (development of a new cough, worsening of an existing cough, difficulty breathing, or fever), then you must consult your doctor immediately.

Patients who buy Iressa may very rarely develop a potentially fatal liver disease. Immediately consult your doctor if you witness symptoms of liver disease (pain in the abdominal area, loss of appetite, extreme tiredness, dark-colored urine, or yellowing of the eyes/skin) at any point in time during the treatment.

The effect of Iressa on an unborn child/nursing infant is unknown. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should use this medicine only when their doctor deems the treatment safe for them.

Unless your doctor tells you otherwise, do not take grapefruit during the treatment as it may increase some of the side effects of Gefitinib.

Iressa Dosage

Iressa is to be taken orally. The recommended dose is Iressa 250mg per day. You can take this medicine with or without food.

Interactions

Certain medications (such as warfarin, rifampin, itraconazole, phenytoin, and others) may decrease the efficacy or increase certain side effects of Iressa. Therefore, it is absolutely necessary that you inform your doctor about all the medications that you are taking before starting the treatment. You must also not take any new medicines during the course of treatment without consulting your doctor.
