General Information On Restasis
Restasis is used for increasing the production of tears in the eyes. It is used in patients who have suppressed tear production which may be due to inflammation of the eyes. This inflammation may be associated with kerato-conjunctivitis sicca or dry eyes disease. The drug is an immuno-suppressant agent. It is used topically in the form of eye drops. It helps to fight the route cause of the inflammation or condition. Brand or generic Restasis has an anti-inflammatory effect. It acts as a partial immuno-modulator. The exact mechanism of action of the drug is not known. However, the drug shows its effects on the ocular surface as well as lacrimal gland wherein the drug acts by reducing the inflammation caused due to some disease (such as dry eye disease).
Side Effects/Precautions For Restasis
Common side effects of Restasis include general discomfort in the eyes or burning in the eyes. If you have these side effects then inform your doctor about it and you may continue using the drug. However, if these side effects become worse or persist for a long time then get medical help. Difficulty in reading, blurred vision, pain in the eyes, yellowish or clear fluid oozing from the eyes, halos appearing around the light and feeling of some foreign body in the eyes are rare side effects of Cyclosporine.
The Restasis drug also has rare side effects such as watery eyes, a stinging feeling, matted or sticky eye-lashes, reddening of the eyes. Dosages For Restasis
The recommended dose of brand or generic Restasis is one drop of the ophthalmic emulsion to be instilled in the affected eye. The drug is administered twice a day, with a time interval of 12 hours. Before administering the eye drops, the drug vial is inverted several times in order to obtain white color, uniform and opaque emulsion. The drug can be administered along with (or concomitantly) certain artificial tears, with a minimum time interval of 15 minutes. Restasis is not recommended in geriatric patients, pediatric patients as well as in patients who are below the age of 16 years.
