General Information On Valcyte
Valcyte is used to treat infections caused by cytomegalovirus (CMV). The antiviral drug is mostly prescribed for treating Retinitis caused due to CMV in adult patients with AIDS. While it is also used for the prevention of CMV infections in adults; children with heart, liver and kidney transplants are also sometimes prescribed the Valcyte drug.
Side Effects/Precautions For Valcyte
Side effects of Valcyte, chemically known as Valganciclovir could be severe. It mostly causes blood related and kidney related problems. Anemia is the most common side effect experienced in both adults and children. Another serious blood related problem is thrombocytopenia, a disorder that causes serious bleeding that could be fatal. Bone marrow related problems are also associated with its use. Gastro intestinal problems like abdominal pain and diarrhea are among the common side effects. Being allergic to Valganciclovir can cause these side effects as well. Muscle related problems like pain, fatigue are possible mostly in aged users.
While it is prescribed for preventing infections in transplant patients, brand or generic Valcyte can cause graft rejection. Individuals with kidney problems might also have side effects if the drug is not able to make its way out through the kidneys. Aged people who have a reduced kidney function with anuria are not prescribed the drug. You have to let your doctor know if you are planning for pregnancy as brand or generic Valcyte can harm unborn babies and is usually not prescribed for a woman who wants to get pregnant in the near future.
Valcyte Dosage
Although, Valcyte is available both as tablets and oral solutions to be taken with food, adult patients should take tablets only. The dosage administered for adult patients with renal impairment is 900 mg twice daily for a period of 21 days as an induction process and is followed by a maintenance process of 900 mg once a day. A daily dose of the drug is recommended by pediatricians for children. This is based on a Schwartz formula depending on the patient’s BSA and creatinine clearance value. Maximum dosage cannot exceed 900 mg when prepared as oral solution for pediatric patients.
