General Information on Wellbutrin SR
Wellbutrin SR is a drug is used to treat certain psychiatric disorders including severe depression, suicidal intent and dissociation or disinterest in life. Although a medication containing the same active ingredient is used for aiding tobacco cessation, Wellbutrin SR is not approved for such use. This drug belongs to a class of drugs known as aminoketones. It works by regulating the levels of dopamine and norepinephrine. SR in the name of this drug stands for Sustained Release.
Side Effects/ Precautions for Wellbutrin SR
Wellbutrin SR contains Buproprione as the active ingredient and is known to cause side effects like rash, nausea and in higher doses agitation and migraine. Other than these, insomnia, weight loss, dryness, dizziness and constipation may also be seen with this drug. As this drug could cause worsening of clinical depression, patients who consume brand or generic Wellbutrin SR must be kept under supervision. Should the patient show any signs of exaggerated depression or suicidal thoughts after commencement of therapy, the drug must be stopped and patient should immediately be reported to a doctor.
Wellbutrin SR drug must not be given to those patients who are known to have seizures. Those who show worsening of depression after treatment with brand or generic Wellbutrin SR could be showing initial signs of bipolar disorder and so treatment with this medication alone may not be appropriate for treatment of such patients. To reduce risk of toxicity, dose of Wellbutrin SR drug should not exceed 400 mg a day. This medication may increase blood pressure; therefore, hypertensive patients should be cautious while using this drug. Its safety in pregnant women has not been clearly established and so patients may consume Wellbutrin SR drug only if benefits outweigh risk. It should be avoided by nursing mothers as Buproprione is known to be excreted through breast milk.
